Lots of Love for Literacy
Cambria-Friesland Elementary has been actively implementing the Early Literacy Initiatives previously highlighted in October’s newsletter. In mid-January, we completed our first state-mandated aimswebPLUS reading readiness screenings for all K-3 students. On January 20th, during our Professional Learning day, our teachers analyzed this data and developed Personal Reading Plans for students scoring below the 25th percentile. These plans target specific skills needed for reading proficiency, ultimately fostering a love of reading by equipping students with the tools for success.
Here are a few upcoming activities that we hope will also inspire a love of literacy within our students:
Author Visit with Judy Young
Many students have not had an opportunity to meet an author, so we are looking forward to having our elementary students connect with Judy Young in a virtual author visit on February 28th. Judy Young is the award-winning author of thirty children’s fiction, poetry and nonfiction picture books and novels. Students will have the opportunity to learn what it’s like to be an author and Judy’s journey to get there. The programs that our students will participate in feature the following books written by Judy:
-
Hu Wan and the Sleeping Dragon (grades 2-3)
-
Digger and Daisy (pre-K-1)
-
Bobby Babinski’s Bathtub (pre-K-1)
-
Promise (grades 4-8)
Maybe this visit will inspire some of our own students to become authors one day!
Books and Blankets Literacy Night
Mark your calendars for our annual Books and Blankets event! This will be held on Tuesday, March 4 (registration begins at 5:00 with activities starting at 5:30). Last year we had a record number of students attending, and we hope to break that record this year!
March Madness Bracket of Books
CF Elementary School will be having a “bracket of books” again this year! This year we decided to incorporate our monthly character traits, so all of our books will be related to our social-emotional curriculum. Stay tuned for the winning book!
